Born: 13 ventôse X [3 Mar 1802], Villars-le-Sec, Belfort, France.

Died: 11 Apr 1852, Mooresville, Indiana

Occupation: Weaver.

Spouse: Francoise Prenat (30 prairial XII [19 Jun 1804], Villars le Sec, Belfort, France - 31 Jun 1885, New Albany, Indiana), first cousin (once removed), daughter of 15.  Pierre Antoinne6 Prenat and Marie Barbe Stouder; married 13 Feb 1828, Villars-le-Sec, Belfort, France.

The exact date is unknown, but some time in the winter of 1845-46, following the death of his mother-in-law, Marie Barbe Stouder, at Villars-le-Sec on 25 Nov. 1845, Jean Jacques and his family, including his widowed father-in-law, Pierre Antoine Prenat, emigrated to the U.S. On 2 March 1846, Jean Jacques purchased an 80-acre farm in or near the “French Settlement” at New Albany Twp., Floyd Co., Indiana.

  • Florentine Prenat (born 14 Nov 1828, Villars-le-Sec, Belfort, France).

    During the Civil War, Florentine Prenat served in the Union Army.

    Joined November 26, 1861 for 3 years at Camp Sigel, Jefferson County, Kentucky.

    1/62 & 2/62: "not stated".
    3/62 & 4/62 "not stated".
    4/30 - 8/31/62: " absented himself without leave while at Louisville, Ky. Dec. (?) _____ at his home Floyd Co. Ind."
    9/62 & 10/62: "absented himself while at Louisville Ky Sep 28 1862 without leave".
    11/62 & 12/62: "absented himself without leave while at Louisville, Ky. Sept. 28, 1862"
    1/63 & 2/63: "absent without leave in New Albany, Indiana".
    4/10/63: "absent without leave since Sep 1862".
    3/63 & 4/63: "deserted Sep 28/62 Louisville Ky".
    "Appears on Return of Absentees to _____ 31. '63. Absent _____ __ 1862 Louisville. Lives in New Albany, Ind. Deserter".

    5/64 & 6/64: "Absent. Wounded near Marietta, Ga., now in field hospital".
    7/64 & 8/64: "Absent. Wounded near Marietta, Ga. June 23, '64. In hospital Nashville, Tenn. Sentence of Genl court Martial for desertion. Forfeiture of all pay and allowances now due him and make good the time lost by serving the U.S. government after his present term of enlistment expires."
    9/64 & 10/64: same as above.
    Mustered out June 65 Nashville, Tenn. "Last paid to 4/30/62. Clothing account last settled 11/28/61." Desertion noted and "now in hospital. Not mustered out."

    FLORENTINE PRENET -- CIVIL WAR RECORD, p-2.

    June 1865 "Transferred to make good time lost by desertion" (this was to be 18 months and 13 days).
    Also on film is a receipt for the person of "Floran Prenatt" that shows him to be 35 years old, of dark complexion, 5 feet 7 inches in height, and indicates that a reward of $30.00 is claimed; the receipt for the reward is also on film.

  • Marguerite Rose Prenat (21 Mar 1830, Villars-le-Sec - 3 Feb 1831, Villars-le-Sec).
  • Joseph Alexander Prenat (27 Apr 1832, Villars-le-Sec, Belfort, France - 19 Aug 1864, Andersonville, Macon, Georgia). Died of dysentery; interred at Andersonville National Cemetery.

    During the Civil War, Joseph Prenat served in Company B of the 38th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
