By all genealogical accounts, Richard Perrenat is the most ancient direct ancestor known for every person in the United States with the surnames Prenat and Prenatt, other than those people who may have come by these surnames through adoption or marriage. Richard was born about 1611 in Montbouton, Alsace, a Catholic parish in what is now the Franche-Comté region of present day France. When Richard was born, Alsace was still part of the Holy Roman Empire under the administration of the Hapsburgs of Austria. This was before the Thirty Years War, which raged through central Europe from 1618 to 1648, with Alsace as one of its principal battlegrounds. After the war, the Hapsburgs ceded to France whatever claims they had to Alsace in a treaty known as the Peace of Westphalia.
